A search and rescue (SAR) crewman at RAF Boulmer is running the Great North Run in full SAR overwater kit.
Nigel Mortimer, known as Morty, is taking on the challenge for HospiceCare North Northumberland.
Morty, a volunteer for the charity, was hoping his athletic efforts would raise £250 for the cause. However, he has been inundated with sponsorship and now he hopes he can smash the £1,000 mark.
He said: “I really wanted to be involved in the local community, helping those who need assistance for whatever reason.
“I became a volunteer for HospiceCare North Northumberland about six months ago and raising money for this cause is a key role and one I hopefully can contribute to.”

Others taking part for HospiceCare include Claire Jamieson, who is running in memory of her grandmother, as well as Angela Matthewson, who will be participating in a wheelchair and will be pushed round by a group of fund-raisers.
