GCSE RESULTS: James Calvert Spence College, Amble

Particularly pleasing for the school was the progress of students in English and maths.

Executive headteacher, Neil Rodgers, said: “There have been some outstanding success stories in our GCSEs and I have been delighted with how the year group has worked throughout the year, in what has been a time of significant change in the school.

“Initial calculations indicate that our Progress 8 score (based on a pupil’s performance across eight subjects) shows that all of our students have progressed as they should have done since primary and that is down to the high-quality teaching in the college.

“It’s very hard to pick out individual success stories as everyone has done well, but special mention should be made of Georgia Sheldon who achieved three A*s, three As, two Bs and two Cs; Georgia Hill with an A*, five As and five Bs; Molly Gordon who gained seven As, two Bs and two Cs; and Euan Witherley who achieved four As, two Bs and five Cs.”

Of the stand-out performers, Georgia Sheldon said she was happy with her results, especially in the sciences and English. The Widdrington student secured A*s in English literature, physics and chemistry, As in biology, maths and English language, Bs in ICT and geography, Cs in PE and RE and a D in French.

She is now looking forward to studying maths, biology, chemistry and physics at JCSC’s Sixth Form.

Georgia Hill said she worked hard ahead of her exams and this dedication paid off, as she scored an A* in DT, as well as A grades in maths, chemistry, physics, graphics and geography. She also achieved Bs in English language and literature, RE, biology and ICT.

She said: “It feels really good to get my results and I am really pleased with my A in graphics.”

The teenager, who lives near Eshott, will be going on to JCSC’s Sixth Form to study DT, maths, physics and chemistry.

“I am really happy with my results,” declared a delighted Britney Fraser after notching an impressive haul of grades, which included an A* in art/design and As in graphics and English literature.

She admitted to feeling really nervous before results day, but she needn’t have worried, as her scores also included Bs in English language, RE, maths, science, additional science and geography, as well as a C in ICT.

Britney, from Widdrington, is moving on to JCSC’s Sixth Form, where she will study ICT, business, fashion and art.

A fine collection of results was an early birthday present for Mollydee Mitchell, who turns 16 this weekend. The Amble student obtained an A* in food technology, as well as As in DT, maths and English language, plus B grades in English literature, biology, chemistry and physics and Cs in art and RE.

”I am happy, especially with my maths and English language,” said Mollydee, who will study English language, sociology, DT and biology at JCSC’s Sixth Form.

Charlotte Kerr, from Amble, was pleased with her grades, after she notched an A* in DT, As in English literature, RE and biology, Bs in geography, English language, maths, chemistry and physics and a C in French.

Charlotte, who will study sociology, history, English language and biology at JCSC’s Sixth Form, said: “I am pleased with my results, especially with my maths and English.”

Impressive grades were also on the cards for Zac Coils, who scored an A in English language and maths, Bs in financial calculations, biology, physics, DT, geography and use of maths, a C in English literature, chemistry, art/design, and PE and D in RE and data handling.

Zac, from Broomhill, said: “I am fairly happy with my grades. The A in maths was pleasing and I was surprised with my English.” He is staying at JCSC to study art, DT, sports and geography at Sixth Form.

Heaping further praise on the students and staff, Mr Rodgers added: “It’s the first year of the new Progress 8 measure, designed to encourage schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stage 4.

In essence, it records the progress a student has made across eight subjects; English and maths which are double-weighted to reflect their importance, three other English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects (sciences, computer science, geography, history and languages) and three further subjects or vocational qualifications.

“We’re look forward to continuing the majority of our students’ development in the JCSC Sixth Form itself while some are going direct to other colleges. We are growing our Sixth Form, but can still offer a fantastically low teacher to student ratio with a range of subjects, including our unique and very successful fashion course.”
