Two schemes in north Northumberland are set to get a boost in the coming financial year as part of £135million of Government funding in the North East region over the next two years.

The Warkworth Flood Alleviation Scheme has been given £100,000 through Defra’s Flood Defence Grant in Aid scheme.

The rest of the £400,000 cost will be met through £300,000 of local levy funding.

The scheme, which is set to start in 2013/14, would see 25 homes moved from a very significant or significant flood risk category to moderate or low risk.

Another 25 homes would become part of a lower probability flood area.

Further north, some funding has also been allocated to the Beadnell North Sea Wall improvements.

This major £1.3million project is mooted to get £55,000 in 2013/14 with further indicative funding of £970,000 in 2014/15.

When this scheme is completed, the risk of coastal erosion will be reduced for 96 homes, while another 83 homes will be protected against loss in 20 years of coastal erosion.

Among the major funding allocations is Morpeth, which is to receive £10.2million of Government funding to go alongside £10.9million raised locally.

The scheme will provide improved protection to more than a thousand properties,
