Fun for all ages as crowds flock to seaside fetes

County Council chairman John Taylor was invited to open the Boulmer Volunteer Recue Service fete at the weekend where he is seen with pirates (and crew members) James Handyside and cox Chris Chapman along with Carl Stewart, John Woodhouse, Claire Bowron and Lucy McCaig.

Visitors and local people enjoyed fun for all the family despite poor weather at two seaside fetes over the weekend.

The Boulmer Volunteer Rescue Service fete and the Seahouses Annual Lifeboat Fete both took place over the Bank Holiday break.

At Seahouses on Monday, crowds defied the rain to enjoy attractions including a demonstration by the RAF helicopter.

Ian Clayton, lifeboat operations manager at Seahouses, said that around £6,000 had been raised for the RNLI.

One of this year’s highlights came with a display of classic and customised motorbikes by a North East motor club.

They raised around £500 by taking visitors on rides to Bamburgh on the two- and three-wheelers.

“They were incredibly well-supported. I believe one old lady had to be helped from a wheelchair onto the back of this bike,” Ian said.

The Seahouses lifeboat had proved its worth the previous day after it was called to rescue a German yacht stranded off Belford point on Sunday.

At Boulmer on Saturday, money was raised for the village’s lifeboat station, one of the only independent crews in the country.

Crew chairman Finlay Bowron said that while numbers were affected by the weather, organisers were still ‘more than happy’ with the event.

“Everything considered it was still a success,” he said.

The Amble Harbour Day was also held over the weekend in aid of the RNLI. Full report and pictures on page 43.
