Four-legged volunteer for Northumberland village's bloom efforts

The community effort to ensure a north Northumberland seaside village is looking its best for its inaugural entry to Northumbria in Bloom has seen an unexpected four-legged helper join in.

As previously reported, Beadnell has entered the annual Northumbria in Bloom competition for the first time this year and volunteers have been working hard to get the village looking ship-shape.

Peter Jenkinson, from Beadnell Community Volunteers, said: "The whole thing only works because we have a great bunch of people who volunteer to do all the various jobs needed, which includes litter-picking, and we now have a new volunteer - my German shepherd dog Rosey.

"I've trained her to search for discarded cans and plastic bottles, pick them up and put them in the litter bin. German shepherds are quick to learn and love having a job to do. On this morning's walk around the village she picked up four cans, two plastic bottles, a rubber glove and a copy of yesterday's Daily Mail."

Meanwhile, Beadnell Community Volunteers is holding its Open Gardens Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26, which follows the success of a similar event two years ago that raised more than £3,000 to fund the repair of the village clock.

Around 15 gardens of all types will be open, ranging from a few square metres to more than an acre in size, as well as new areas resulting from the village's entry into the Northumbria in Bloom contest.

The organisers are calling on more gardeners from the village to come forward to join the event and open their gardens. Contact Peter on 07550 014085. There will be plenty happening over the weekend and all proceeds will go to fund village projects.
