Flood workers praised

Parish councillors at Rothbury have expressed public thanks to emergency workers and volunteers who went into action in the recent floods.

Despite the Environment Agency’s email alert system to villagers failing to work, teams on the ground had worked well, it was said, thanks to local knowledge and experience of a previous flood.

Chairman Coun Jeff Reynalds said: “Our thoughts are with the people who have been flooded. Many thanks must go to the blue-light services.”

Members were told the agency’s alert for Rothbury as waters rose was in a queue, but cancelled when it was overtaken by events and the river burst its banks.

Coun Bridgett said he was meeting the agency soon. “We can’t afford for that to happen again.”

A few weeks earlier, EA had been in the village saying it had improved the service.

“But it just didn’t work,” he said.

Councillors agreed lessons had been learned from the flood in 2008 and the practical response was much better, especially because the leading police and fire officers were from the village.
