A community-minded couple have agreed to help keep an iconic memorial area tidy.

Rothbury Parish Council has received a number of complaints about the state of the Armstrong grave, which is known locally as the Fisherman’s Graveyard.

But Coun Bridgett told members at last week’s meeting that Ian and Jean Proudlock had come forward to offer a helping hand at the site.

The couple had worked for the Armstrong family.

Coun Bridgett said: “They have both agreed to come out of retirement and to maintain that plot, to keep it tidy and to cut the grass.

“They worked for the Armstrongs and said that it was the least they could do.

“They didn’t want to see it getting into a terrible state.

“They said that they are more than happy, because of what the Armstrongs gave to the village and to them, to do it as a goodwill gesture.”

Coun Reynalds said that he had previously spoken to the agents responsible for the area about the state of the site.

He is also going to forward the list of complaints to the Corbridge-based agents to highlight residents’ feelings about the state of the site, as well as details about the offer of help from the Proudlocks.
