Father who lost son fights to dual A1
Alexander Gibson who is launching a petition in memory of his son, Alec, to have the A1 dualled.
People in north Northumberland are being encouraged to sign a petition to dual the A1 launched by a grieving father.
In September, Alexander Gibson, from Berwick, launched Project Alexander, named after his son, known as Alec, who died in a crash on the A1 in November.
Alexander Snr is disappointed by the slow pace of development on the busy stretch of road and says he is prepared to knock on every door if that’s what it takes to garner support for dualling the stretch between Berwick and Morpeth.
“We’re aiming for 10,000 signatures to put pressure on the Government,” Mr Gibson said.
“I’d like to get them by November, if possible, for the anniversary of Alec’s death.”
And by the end of last week, he had collected more than 5,000 signatures and he hasn’t even been back down to Alnwick yet to pick up forms that he left all around the town.
Alexander’s plea has also amassed nearly 1,000 signatures through an e-petition that has the capability to go straight to the cortidors of power.
The petition comes as investment in the A1 is being mooted from a £40billion kitty that the Chancellor George Osborne has announced for major infrastructure projects.
The 65-mile stretch of road between Newcastle and Berwick – half of which is single carriageway – was last year recognised as a route of strategic national importance.
