Gladys Steele, who lives at Abbeyfield House in Warkworth, celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday.
Born in Byker, she worked in various post offices in Newcastle and was a verger at her local church for 20 years before she moved to Warkworth in 1978.
Married to Henry, the couple had two sons, Peter and Geoff, and a daughter, Chris, who described her as an inspiration whose faith had kept her going.
Gladys also attributed her long life to a happy childhood.
Among the gifts she received was a bouquet of flowers from Warkworth Parish Council.
