Tesco has confirmed that long-awaited demolition work at the site of its stalled Amble supermarket development will begin later this month.

The company was due to start clearing and flattening the plot north of Queen Street in mid-August, but was delayed because it needed county council permission.

But the supermarket giant has now been given the green light and will be on site on Monday, September 22, to begin a four-week programme of work.

The derelict buildings will be knocked down and the site cleared, before being fenced off.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We’re grateful to have permission so that we can get on with demolition and deliver what the community has asked for.

“We’ll be providing some of the crushed material to the town council so that walkways for the allotments between West Avenue and The Wynd can be repaired.”

Revised plans for the store are yet to be unveiled.
