'Eyesore' fence to be replaced

A FENCE at Alnwick Cemetery, which was branded an 'eyesore', will be replaced.

Coun Ken Gray, chairman of the town council's cemetery committee, told members during his annual cemetery report that the fence around the lodge garden was in a 'disgusting' state.

Councillors agreed to a request from Coun Gray for a professional welder to replace it with railings, gates and steel posts, which will cost 900 for the entire job.

The meeting also heard that large trees that were blown over last year by gales had been cleared successfully while headstones that were damaged in the devastation had been repaired to a high standard.

Coun Gray said the cemetery continues to be in good order and the chapel is used on a regular basis, but the lodge needs painting.

He concluded his report by praising the employees at the cemetery for the 'good job they do'.
