Two disused paddling pools, which have been criticised for their appearance, could be in line for a much-needed transformation, as experts explore ways of bringing them back into use.

The state of The Paddlers area, in Amble, which also includes an adjacent playground, has long been a source of complaint.

But now, Amble Town Council has commissioned experienced independent consultants to carry out an options analysis and feasibility study of the site.

The organisation says it will work closely with Northumberland County Council, which is responsible for the area, during this process.

It is hoped that once the report is received in the spring, members will have a clearer idea of how to enhance The Paddlers.

Objectives for the site including better recreational facilities for families.

Any future development to the site will be dependent on funding being available.

County councillors Robert Arckless and Jeff Watson have agreed to contribute from their Member’s Small Schemes pots towards a project that is viable and maintainable for the area.

Amble Development Trust has said it is happy to be involved in any joint funding bid that is applied for.

A separate petition – launched by Peter Robinson, who is standing in today’s Amble central ward election – calling for action at the site has attracted around 200 signatures.
