The following are some of the events taking place in north Northumberland to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War on August 4, 1914.

ALNHAM

Sunday, August 3: Requiem for the Fallen, St Michael’s Church, 10.30am.

ALWINTON

Saturday, August 2: Memorial concert, St Michael and All Angels, 7.30pm.

AMBLE

Saturday, August 2: Service, Amble West Cemetery, 10am; procession to War Memorial, 10.20am; commemoration including placing of 179 small wooden crosses in behind the Clock Tower, 11am.

BEADNELL

Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3: Exhibition and floral display, St Ebba’s Church, 10am–5pm.

Sunday, August 3: Commemorative service, St Ebba’s, 6pm.

CHRISTON BANK

Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3: Exhibition, Christon Bank Methodist Church, 10am–4pm (Sat), 10am–6pm (Sun).

Sunday, August 3 : Commemorative service, Christon Bank Methodist Church, 6pm.

FELTON/WEST THIRSTON

Monday, August 4: Churches Together Commemoration Service, United Reformed Church, West Thirston, 9pm. Both the URC and St Michael’s in Felton will be open from 6pm for private commemoration/prayer.

LOW HAUXLEY

Monday, August 4, to Sunday, August 10: Exhibition on 31 residents of High and Low Hauxley who enlisted, by Frances Liddle, Village Hall, 10am-4pm.

NETHERWITTON

Sunday, August 3: Village Day featuring commemoration as well as fete activities, stalls, barbecue and afternoon tea, Netherwitton Hall, noon-6pm.

ROTHBURY

Friday, August 1: Flower Festival, exhibition opening and book launch, All Saints Parish Church, 5pm (festival and exhibition also open 10am-4pm Saturday, 11.30am–4pm Sunday and 10am-4pm Monday; concert by Voicemale, All Saints, 7pm.

Monday, August 4: Half-muffled ringing of bells, All Saints, 7.30pm; Act of Remembrance, War Memorial, 8pm.

SHILBOTTLE

Sunday, August 3: Memorial service, St James Church, 10am; followed by march to Memorial Garden for unveiling of new war memorial, then family fun day featuring food, games, activities for children, tug of war and football.

THROPTON

Sunday, August 3: Parade and rededication of Thropton War Memorial Hall, noon.

WARKWORTH

Saturday, August 9: Service, War Memorial, noon; centenary exhibition and afternoon tea followed by film showing of Gallipoli, War Memorial Hall, 1pm–5pm.
