A north Northumberland poultry farmer is looking forward to cracking times ahead after it announced a merger with another leading egg producer.

Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs, based at Detchant Farm near Belford, is joining forces with Lintz Hall Farm in County Durham, one of the North East’s biggest poultry producers.

The deal means Sunny Hill will continue to rear chickens and produce eggs, while Lintz Hall will help handle marketing and distribution.

Catherine Armstrong, who runs Sunny Hill with her parents Robert and Brenda Jackson, said the move would not change the personal service she likes to offer her customers.

She said: “Production and bird welfare is our passion and key strength, and this partnership enables us to concentrate on this.”

Richard Tulip, of Lintz Hall, is part of the fourth generation of his family to keep chickens at the farm, which first started producing eggs to feed local people during the Second World War.

He said: “Like Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs we are a farming family, and we share many of the same principles.”

80 per cent of Sunny Hill’s eggs aresold in and around the North East to restaurants, supermarkets and independent stores, including famous names such as Fenwick’s department store in Newcastle.
