Economy is blooming thanks to the Garden
The Alnwick Garden has delivered as much as £150million in economic benefits to the UK, according to an independent report.
The economic impact study also reveals that 3.8million people have visited the iconic attraction over the last 10 years – with more than half of these visitors coming from outside the North East.
And the report, completed by PwC, shows that for every £1 spent at The Garden, an additional £0.85 is generated within the immediate local economy.
The findings coincide with the attraction’s 10th anniversary.
The Garden was the brainchild of the Duchess of Northumberland and was designed by famous Belgian architects Jacques and Peter Wirtz.
The Duchess said: “The Alnwick Garden is a charitable enterprise designed to deliver real benefits to the North East.
“I am thrilled to hear that the project has delivered so much, both economically and socially, over the past decade.
“We have stayed true to the vision and delivered an unparalleled, family-friendly, public attraction to rival anything in Europe. And the best bit is – there’s more to come.”
The Garden has employed 331 people each year and the survey – which is titled The Alnwick Garden: 10th Anniversary Summary of Economic Impact Report, June 2012 – suggests that for every 10 of these jobs, a further 2.4 are created elsewhere.
Some 30,000 volunteer hours have been dedicated to the delivery of The Garden’s charitable programmes in the past 10 years. More than 40,000 learning opportunities are experienced by school and college pupils each year and a further 10,000 places on cultural and social activities for the elderly are also offered, as well as thousands of specially-developed play activities for U5s.
Coun Thomas Brechany, executive member for planning, housing and regeneration at Northumberland County Council, said: “The Garden has put the North East on the ‘international tourism map’, significantly increasing visitor numbers to Alnwick and surrounding areas.
