Drop in hate crime and racist offences
The amount of recorded hate crime in the Northumbria Police force area fell by five per cent in a year, Home Office statistics reveal.
The figures, which were released by the Government, show a drop from 689 in 2010 to 657 in 2011.
The statistics also reveal that racist incidents in the force area fell by 11 per cent over the last two years – from 1,027 incidents to 913.
Deputy chief constable Mark Gilmore said: “Northumbria Police is committed to combatting hate crime and work closely with our partners to tackle all forms of the crime and provide the support people need.
“We’re always looking to improve accessibility and reporting opportunities, ensure accurate recording and investigation of hate crime and identify repeat victims to prevent further offences.”
To report hate crime directly to the police, contact police on the 101 non-emergency number or, if it is an emergency, dial 999.
