Three vehicle crash on the A1 near Felton on Monday November 12th.

Police investigating a fatal crash on the A1 in north Northumberland are calling on a potential key witness to get in touch.

As reported in the Gazette, the collision happened at 7.43am on Monday, November 12, last year, when a white BMW was driving southbound on the A1 near Felton.

It crossed the central line and collided with a Citroen that was travelling north before colliding with a VW van that was also travelling north.

The driver of the van – 37-year-old Nigel Sowerby, from Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire – died as a result of his injuries.

Officers are continuing to carry out inquiries into the crash and have identified the driver of a vehicle who could be a key witness.

Around the time of the collision, a white Vauxhall Corsa was travelling southbound on the A1 and officers are keen to speak to the driver as he may have seen what happened or the way the BMW was being driven before it was involved in the collision.

Road safety Sergeant Steve Templeman said: “We’ve spoken to a number of witnesses but are still keen to speak to more and our inquiries have identified a white Vauxhall Corsa which was going southbound on the A1 at the time.

“We know the driver wasn’t involved but may have seen the BMW before the collision happened and this could be crucial to our investigation.

“Given the time of the collision, it could be this was someone on their way to work and I’d ask people to think back and if they think it may have been them to contact us.”

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101, ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

At the time, the fatality, which occurred on the single-carriageway section, put fresh emphasis on the campaign to dual the A1.

The widows of two men killed on the A1 within four months of each other in 2008 and 2009 spoke of their frustration at the lack of progress on dualling in the intervening years, with one describing it as ‘disgusting’.
