Cubs and Scouts pick litter...from 4,414 feet

A hardy group of Cubs and Scouts carried out a monster litter-pick, by collecting rubbish all the way down Britain's highest mountain.

Members of 1st Whittingham Baden Powell Scout Group conquered Ben Nevis earlier this month, as part of a fund-raising mission for a trip to Uganda next week.

And after reaching the summit – standing at 4,414 feet – the inspiring youngsters gave the Scottish landmark a spring clean on their return to ground level.

It was a great effort from the seven Cubs and four Scouts, as well as the two Seniors and six leaders who took part – who were on the mountain for more than 12 hours.

Group Scout Master Ninette Gray said: “I am so proud and they showed amazing BP spirit, smiling throughout.

“We tend to do a litter-pick wherever we go, but Ben Nevis was certainly one of the more quirky places that we have done.

“We collected one sack of rubbish – there were quite a few one-litre water bottles and other bits that had blown away – but we were pleasantly surprised that there wasn’t as much rubbish as we feared there would be. People seemed to be respecting the mountain.

“This year marks the centenary of Cub Scouting and we were challenged to climb a mountain as part of this – so we wanted to chose Britain’s highest, and we conquered it.”

The climb also doubled up as fund-raising efforts for the Scouts’ expedition to Uganda. The group departs on Tuesday for a trip of just over two weeks in length and they will be carrying out numerous projects in Africa, including tree-planting.
