Crown court date for drug offences

An Alnwick man facing two Class-A drug charges will have his case heard at crown court.

John Angus, 31, from Upper Barresdale, is facing one charge of supplying a quantity of MDMA (the chemical name for ecstasy) to Gareth Balmbra, also from Alnwick.

Mr Balmbra, 30, died after taking the drug, it is believed.

Angus is also up for one count of the possession of heroin.

He appeared in front of magistrates at Bedlington last Thursday, but no pleas were entered.

The prosecution told the court that police were informed of the death of Mr Balmbra on Saturday, December 8. He had suffered a cardiac arrest and it was assumed that this was brought on by a drugs overdose.

Magistrates committed the case to Newcastle Crown Court and Angus is set to appear on May 15.
