A popular north Northumb erland attraction has been named as one of the top 10 landmarks in the UK, according to TripAdvisor.

The National Trust’s Cragside House and Gardens, near Rothbury, was ranked eighth in the online travel site’s Traveller’s Choice Awards.

In its second year, the awards for attractions highlight the top landmarks and parks around the globe.

Cragside curator Andrew Sawyer said: “We’ve just been blown away when you think of the places that could have been on. Cragside is an icon in the North East, but to be recognised country-wide is astounding really. We’re so thrilled people love our place and we like to engender that right from the minute they arrive.”

James Kay, spokesman for TripAdvisor, said: “With schools breaking up for the summer holidays in a matter of weeks, these attractions will serve as a great must see and do list for families – especially as many of them can be enjoyed for free.”

Durham Cathedral was also in the top 10 with The Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh at the top of the list.

Other attractions in the North East have also been recognised by TripAdvisor, with certificates of excellence.

English Heritage properties Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, Warkworth Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle have all been given the accolade.

Julie Spowart, territory marketing manager for English Heritage in the north, said: “We are delighted that our sites in the North East have received such a great endorsement from the public.”

The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence is based on public opinion.
