Couple who died in A697 crash are named

A couple who died when their car was involved in a collision yesterday afternoon have been named as Ronald and Sheila Smailes, from Wooler in Northumberland.

The crash happened at 4.10pm on the A697, a mile-and-a-half north of the New Moor House crossroads near to the junction with the Swarland wood mill.

Mr and Mrs Smailes, who were 79 and 74, were travelling in a Ford Focus when it was involved in a collision with a Mazda. Both subsequently died from their injuries.

The Mazda driver was taken to hospital, but was not seriously hurt.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and any witnesses are asked to contact 101 extension 69191.

The road was closed southbound between Bridge of Aln and New Moor House following the incident.
