County pressed over costs

A small council that is being asked to run a local cemetery is being denied information on running costs, county councillors have been told.

East Chevington Parish Council’s attempts to gain details from the county so it could plan its budget had come to nothing, local county councillor Glen Sanderson, who is ward member for Chevington with Longhorsley, told the December meeting of the full council.

“I’m told that they still have not received those details and they have to fix their budget by January 25,” Coun Sanderson said.

Council deputy leader Coun Roger Styring said the costing of cemeteries was being reviewed.

After a meeting in the coming week, the transfer would be taken forward with parish councils.

Coun Sanderson replied: “It’s actually a very short timescale that we are giving those parish councils, isn’t it?

“I think in all fairness it’s not really the most reliable way of doing it.”

Coun Styring said: “It isn’t within our gift to predict what the budget will be.”
