County facing a ‘housing timebomb’

More than 11,600 households across Northumberland are currently languishing on waiting lists for desperately-needed social housing, a new report has warned.

Home Truths: North East 2012 states that the county is facing a ‘housing timebomb’ as there are not enough homes to go around.

The National Housing Federation (NHF) is urging the Government to hand over disused brownfield public land to allow housing associations to build more homes.

Monica Burns, North East lead manager for the NHF, said: “The lack of affordable housing is a tragedy for families across Northumberland who are helplessly watching as the cost of renting or buying a home spirals out of reach.”

The NHF’s new campaign, Yes to Homes, is encouraging people to speak up in support of more new housing. For details, visit www.yestohomes.co.uk
