Councillor kicks up a stink on dog fouling

The number of fines issued by Northumberland County Council to the owners of dogs fouling on the street is ‘shockingly low’ according to Conservative councillors.

Between April 2011 and April 2012, just 11 fines were issued across the county. In Durham County Council, a large rural county facing similar issues, the figure was 228.

In his role as chairman of the communities scrutiny committee, Conservative Group deputy leader Coun Glen Sanderson called the responsible Lib-Dem executive member to explain these figures at a meeting yesterday .

“This appears to fly in the face of the Lib Dem claims to have a zero tolerance policy on dog dirt,” he said. “They appear to be tolerating rather a lot of the stuff.

This is an issue that affects residents across the county, and every man, woman and child will want this to be more of a priority for the council.”
