A councillor who was seriously injured in a crash last week is making good progress in hospital.
Gordon Castle, who represents Alnwick on Northumberland County Council as well as being a town councillor, was airlifted to Newcastle RVI on Friday after the motorbike he was riding was involved in a collision with a car on B6341 near South Charlton.
He suffered head, neck and spinal injuries, but his wife, Liz, says he is doing well and she expects he will be back on his bike when he’s recovered.
She said: “He had a bit of a head injury and he didn’t know where he was or what had happened, but yesterday we had a much better day and he could understand that he was in hospital and that he’d had an accident.
“Physically things will take time but most of us were concerned about the mental impact so it was such a relief for me to see an improvement in him.
“He has fractured his neck and his sacrum, which I believe is the worst injury, but there is no spinal cord damage which is good.
“The fractures are stable so he just has to keep still. He asked if he was going to be staying in overnight and I said he might be in a bit longer than that.
“The day before yesterday he was terrible, I was really worried, but yesterday I just thought thank God.
“The staff have been fantastic, they make such a difference.”
Gordon, 66, is currently in the high dependency unit at the RVI but it is hoped that he will be moved to a ward later this week, following more x-rays and an MRI scan.
And Mrs Castle thinks he’ll be back on his bike when he’s fully recovered.
“He’s been riding for 49 years and it’s the first serious crash he has had,” she said.
“I think he came off once previously but he didn’t hurt himself. He always said if he had a bad crash he would think twice but he was concerned about the bike and disappointed to hear that it was damaged so at least he is showing an interest.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with messages of support from people, it’s been absolutely wonderful. He is a lovely man, I am married to him so I’m prejudiced but he is a really genuine, lovely man.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened at 2.28pm on the B6341 near South Charlton, north of Alnwick.
