Northumberland County Council is reminding people to be aware after a scam was reported where a caller asked for a resident’s bank details.

The resident received a phone call from a man stating he was from the council and there was a problem with his Council Tax direct debit.

The caller said to rectify the problem he would need the resident’s bank details. After refusing to provide them, the caller became agitated and the resident terminated the phone call.

The council is reminding that if residents receive an unsolicited call asking for personal information relating to Council Tax, payments or bank details and they are at all unsure of the caller’s identity they should hang up and contact the council on 0845 600 6400 and ask for the Council Tax Team who will be able to advise.

Personal details should never be given out over the phone if you are unsure who you are talking to.
