Northumberland County Council has appointed Compass Developments to deliver the construction phase of a £550,000 revamp, which aims to create a modern, multi-purpose facility for residents.
The project will involve the construction of a two-storey extension, creating a community gym with state-of-the-art equipment on the ground floor and a first floor dedicated to the area’s thriving boxing club.

Hide AdRefurbishment works have already taken place at the centre, which has been revitalised on the inside, and phase two is expected to take around 18 weeks to complete.
The new gym will be managed by Active Northumberland, and will be equipped with the latest fitness equipment.
County councillor for the area, Scott Dickinson, said: “We have already seen a number of improvements on the inside of the building, but now the project gets really interesting with the physical transformation of the building about to get under way.
“Compass Developments is a local firm with a great track record, a good understanding of what we are trying to achieve and a conscientious approach to working on community projects such as this. We believe the community centre is in very good hands with them.

“It will offer a range of activities and facilities and become a real focal point for the people of Hadston.”
The project is due for completion in late 2016 and has been designed by architects Crawford Higgins.
In March last year, we reported that contractors had been appointed for a £2.5million scheme to develop sports and leisure facilities in Hadston, which would include both the work to the community centre and the development of a community park on the former middle school site. This followed the allocation of the capital funding by the county council and an initial public consultation in 2014.However, it wasn’t until March this year that proposals for the community centre were successfully unveiled to the public.
The planning application was approved in May and in June, it was reported that phase one, involving the full internal refurbishment of the centre was set to begin later that month.
