How do you cope with three newly-born meerkats, especially when their mum is being mean to them? Simples.
You take matters into your own hands, as volunteer staff at Eshott Heugh Animal Park, near Felton, did. Unsure whether the pups would survive, they resorted to feeding them kitten milk administered through a pipette every two hours.
Park director Linda Bradley said: “They were being neglected by their mother, so we put them into a little box to separate them from the adults. Next time we looked, they were out. They started picking up scratches and one ended up missing half its tail.
“We knew that if we left them be, they wouldn’t likely survive, so we took over. They had to be fed every two hours – including through the night.”
Asha, Bahati and Half-tail are now thriving at the park with the other meerkats.
