Closure could be on cards for first school

The governing body of a north Northumberland first school, which recently received an inadequate rating from Ofsted, is to consult parents on closing the school, the Gazette understands.

St Cuthbert’s RC First School, in Amble, is one of four in the county that requires special measures following a string of Ofsted inspections in October.

A recommendation to close the school would have to come from the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and the governing body, as it is a Roman Catholic school, but the decision would be made by the county council, following the legal process which includes consultation.

The school’s chairman of governors, Paul Claridge, did not want to comment ahead of a public meeting, which is due to take place at the school at 5pm on Wednesday, saying ‘everything will be disclosed then’.

A Gazette request for comment from the Diocese’s director of education went unanswered at the time of going to press.
