Clearance work has started at Aldi site

Groundworks have started at the Alnwick Aldi site, but as yet no dates for starting the construction of the supermarket have been set.

The plot on South Road, where the former Willis garage stood, is being worked on by contractors, on behalf of Northumberland Estates, who were given planning permission for the development of an Aldi store and a Majestic Wine shop in February.

A spokeswoman for Northumberland Estates said: “The work going on at the moment is just the Estates’ contractors preparing the ground for the developers ie. removing the old petrol storage tanks etc.

“The Estates wanted to oversee this bit of the process themselves to make sure there are no contamination issues.

“No date has been given for the main building contractors to start as yet.”

The plans were given the go-ahead by the north area planning committee.
