Church’s bloomin’ good efforts

An Amble church is in the running to win thousands of pounds in a sunflower competition.

St Mark’s URC is taking part in the contest, encouraging the development of a project to help a community.

The church decided to build on links made with Zambia a number of years ago and is aiming to provide a number of sunflower seed presses to be used to produce oil and press cake.

The church has reached the shortlist stage of the contest – the only one north of Newcastle to get this far – and the result will be announced next month. The first prize is for £3,000.

The church is also collecting seeds from the dying flower heads to spread the project further within the community. The aim is to provide seed presses for another community.

As part of the church’s bloomin’ good bid, long-standing member Cathie Adamson was presented with sunflowers to help celebrate her 90th birthday.
