Charity provides emergency aid

ST John Ambulance crews are playing a vital part in making a difference to the region’s emergency response system.

St John Ambulance vehicles and crews in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham are on stand-by to provide extra cover and back up to the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).

The back-up ambulances are booked on duty with NEAS control and are under their command.

St John Ambulance crews deal with a wide range of calls and provide ambulance and care transport services to members of the public. Their vehicles are equipped and ready to respond to any emergency incident as required.

John Purvis, operations manager for St John Ambulance Northumbria, said: “As the nation’s leading first aid charity, St John Ambulance responds to hundreds of local incidents and major accidents each year.

“We play a crucial role in supporting the emergency services when help is needed. St John Ambulance crews are trained and experienced in assessing patients who are seriously ill or injured and providing the appropriate treatment which includes life-saving procedures such as defibrillation. We are always pleased to be able to put our first aid skills into practice and to make the difference in such testing times.”

St John Ambulance is a registered charity and runs all of its first aid, care and ambulance services in the county using highly-trained volunteers.
