‘Cash-mob’ plea as pub feels pinch

A publican who is feeling the full force of the recession has issued a plea for local people and tourists to help him stay in business.

Justin Pringle opened Three Wise Monkeys on Fenkle Street in Alnwick at Easter, but says trading has been difficult due to the economic downturn.

This weekend, to coincide with Alnwick Food Festival, he’s appealing for people to ‘cash-mob’ his pub, in a bid to raise takings and put his establishment on the map.

Cash mobs are designed to bring people together to socialise, but crucially to help boost the local economy by asking them to spend a minimum of £10 in a single venue.

While they have fun, the business gets a much-needed cash injection and the chance to show what they have to offer the community.

Justin said: “Having owned a similar micropub and a bookshop in Yorkshire, I made sure I had everything correct – independence, the lowest overheads possible, in a popular town.

“We do have an amazing base of loyal customers, however, the evening footfall in Alnwick has declined continually since we have opened and there is just no way to sustain ourselves. All I ask, if you have never been in for a drink, or you are just visiting Alnwick this weekend for the Food Festival, please help me to stay in business by popping in to buy a pint, a gin and tonic or even a bottle of local produce to take with you.”

As well as a band playing on Saturday night, the pub – which also features a second-hand bookshop and stocks off-licence drinks – will be running a range of £10 special offers.
