Car plunges into Northumberland river estuary

An elderly woman escaped with minor injuries after her car plunged 15 feet into the River Tweed estuary at Berwick.

Christine Beaumont, of Murton White House, had been visiting friends on Pier Road.

She was driving off just after noon when she lost control of the vehicle, an automatic.

She got out of the car herself but was helped by passers-by until police, the fire brigade and paramedics arrived.

Holly Marett, a witness, said: “There was a huge bang and the car flipped over. Within about ten seconds she was out of the car, it was amazing. She’s had a lucky escape.”

The tide was well out at the time of the incident.
