Cameras to tackle ‘regular’ abuse
Northumberland’s traffic wardens may be provided with body cameras to improve their safety following ‘many incidents’ of abuse from motorists.
The county council took over parking enforcement from the police in April this year and a review of the system so far is due before next week’s meeting of the council’s economic prosperity and strategic services overview and scrutiny committee.
The report states that abuse of the new civil enforcement officers (CEOs) has been ‘much worse than expected’ with ‘extreme uses of bad language and personal insult on a regular basis’.
It also reveals that the use of body cameras, as used in other authortities, is being considered as ‘not only will this enhance officer safety, but the video footage also provides good evidence when a motorist makes a complaint against a CEO’.
The report also acknowledges that some communities have identified areas where it is felt the existing traffic regulations may no longer be relevant, such as Harbour Road, Seahouses, and Amble’s Queen Street.
