Teams are wanted to enter a quirky construction competition which has been launched as part of a new exhibition at Alnwick’s Bailiffgate Museum.

The 2014 Pant Challenge has been unveiled in celebration of the public water fountains which can be found in the town and other areas.

The aim of the event is for competitors to construct a device that lifts water from one level to another and then delivers it through a spout. Any materials can be used.

The challenge has been launched to coincide with a pant-themed exhibition at the museum.

Jane Mann, from the attraction, said: “There have been pants in Alnwick for more than 400 years. St Michael’s Pant is still flowing more than 250 years after it was built.

“Now, the Bailiffgate Museum is looking for teams who can build a pant for today.

“We hope to hear from teams who come together for work, study, social or sports activity, who share a common interest, who know each other well, or want to get to know each other better. We don’t mind whether your device is large or small, though you may want to consider how it will be transported into the museum.”

The challenge is open to all. There is no restriction on age. The only rule is that no mains electricity can be involved.

Entries will be judged on Saturday, September 13, in Alnwick Market Place and special recognition will be given for ingenuity and entertainment value.

After the awards ceremony, the pants will be displayed in the museum as a feature of the exhibition on the pants of Alnwick. It opens on Wednesday and runs until Sunday, November 2. It is supported by Northumbrian Water in association with Alnwick Civic Society.

Jane added: “We take water for granted, but a clean and reliable water supply was a dream for many people in Alnwick in the past.

“There are a fine collection of pants dotted all over Alnwick that made such a difference to people’s lives and the town’s development.”
