Call for circus boycott

AN animal rights charity is calling for a circus to be boycotted because it features an elephant.

The Bobby Roberts Circus is visiting Amble's Little Shore on Saturday and Sunday.

But the Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS) is calling for the boycott because it features Anne, an elephant that has been with the circus for 51 years.

CAPS' campaigns director, Craig Redmond, said: "Despite repeated claims by the circus, Anne the elephant is not retired. She may be too arthritic to perform typical circus tricks any more, but she is still transported across the country so people can pay to have their photo taken alongside her. She deserves a real retirement, in a sanctuary with others of her species."

But Antony Staines, route co-ordinator for the circus, said: "Anne doesn't actually perform anymore but to Bobby she is like a member of the family. It is an emotive subject.

"The circus has a complete team of veterinary surgeons monitoring her. She is in good health but does have a bit of arthritis."

Shows take place on Saturday at 2.30pm and 5pm and 2pm on Sunday. To book ring 07860 787745.
