An award-winning Alnwick butcher has sold his restaurant after 10 years of trading from the centre of the town.

Butcher Mark Turnbull has sold Louis Steakhouse, which he originally bought in 2002 and opened as The Grapevine café, before expanding into the upstairs in 2007 and opening Louis.

Speaking from Orlando earlier this week, Mark said: “I always wanted to run a top-class restaurant that promoted local steaks.

“I passionately believe that Northumberland farmers produce some of the most fantastic beef in the world and what better way of promoting that than by opening a steakhouse?

“I’d like to thank the public for supporting the venture and to all the members of the Louis team for their hard work over the past decade in helping me achieve that goal. I think our most memorable days were the Saturday night that we not only filled the restaurant twice over but also had to turn away over 40 people and also winning the Alnwick Food Festival Restaurant of the Year award in 2009.”

Mark wanted to set the record straight and, contrary to speculation around the town, said he won’t be buying another eatery, so quashing rumours that he was interested in the Coach Inn at Lesbury.

“As time went on, I found I didn’t have the time or energy necessary to take the steakhouse forwards,” he said.

“I’m very focused on making Turnbull’s one of the country’s best butchers and that takes a lot of time and effort.”

Mark also has a rental home to run in Florida and found time this year to write a book, The Orlando Villa Marketing Guide, which will be on sale early next year, with another writing project on the cards for 2013.

The new owners at Louis are Rahim and Amina Uddin, who also own The Barresdale Triple Diner.
