Businesses praised in rural Oscars

TWO north Northumberland businesses were highly commended in the seventh annual Rural Oscars.

Doddington Dairy was commended in the enterprise section while R Green and Son Family Butcher, in Longframlington, was similarly awarded in the butcher’s category at the North East Countryside Alliance Awards 2011.

The awards, now in their seventh year, follow nominations by the public.

R Green and Son was the only butcher nominated from Northumberland, which followed up its win in the same category last year.

Owner Chris Green said he was still very pleased to be highly commended.

“The people that won it, a company at Wingate in County Durham, have recently renovated and have their own abbatoir so to come second to them is very good,” he said.

“It’s very nice to be part of the Countryside Alliance Awards because they do promote the countryside and rural areas and do appreciate what’s involved for businesses, especially butchers.

“The criteria include things like supporting local farms, putting stuff back into the community and being an integral part of the community rather than being a shop where you take the money and run. To have that recognition is great.”

Jackie Maxwell, co-owner of Doddington Dairy, said that they ‘were delighted to get as far as they did’.

“As a company, we hope that we have always tried to be enterprising, right from the very beginning,” she said.

“It’s about working with, and within, the community. The awards seem to be looking to recognise what’s going on in rural communities.

“Rural communities are finding it tough sometimes at the moment, and they are looking for the positives. There’s always something positive going on and if everyone works together we can get through this recession.”
