Businesses rewarded for championing local food

FOOD awards have been scooped by businesses across the district for their recognition of local produce.

The inaugural North Northumberland Food Awards recognise the contribution catering and hospitality businesses offer in terms of local food and produce.

They reward those who make a conscious effort to use and source British food produced in the region.

Almost 90 business in the district sent in applications, supported by menus and other information showing how they use and promote local food and drink.

Derek Sharman, co-ordinator of the awards said: "There are many food awards schemes in the country, but I believe that this scheme is unique.

"Normally, awards are given primarily on the basis of quality and presentation.

"The North Northumberland Food Awards are different in that they are intended to reward those businesses that highlight the quality and variety of locally-sourced produce and who use imaginative promotion of local food and drink as an essential element of their offer to their customers.

"I hope these awards will become established and expand in the coming years."

Bronze, silver and gold awards were given in six categories recognising the different areas of the industry. These were food and drink retailers, hotels and restaurants, pubs and bistros, cafes, self catering and guest houses and B&Bs.

Mark Turnbull won two silver awards for the butchers R Turnbull & Sons and Louis Steakhouse both in Alnwick. Grannies, Alnwick, won a gold for its food and drink retailing as did Tully's of Rothbury.

The Ship Inn at Newton-by-the-Sea won a gold in the pubs and bistros category, as did The Sportsman at Embleton.

Other winners included a gold for The Northumberland House in Longhougton in the self-catering category, as well as a gold for The Old School at Newton on the Moor, Harbour Lights at Craster and Redfoot Lea in Alnwick in the B&Bs category.
