Brother pays respects after farmer’s quad-bike death

The devastated brother of a female farmer who was killed in a quad-bike crash – just a week before her 65th birthday – has spoken of his shock.
Mystery surrounds the death of Liz McIntosh, following the incident at the farm she owned at West Todholes, Elsdon, on Friday afternoon.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and police are appealing for witnesses.
Her farmer brother, John Boon, from Beamish, County Durham, paid his tributes to Liz, as friends and family are still coming to terms with her death.
“We are all terribly shocked and very upset,” he said.
“As far as the accident is concerned, it is a bit of a mystery.
“It is still under investigation.”
Divorced Ms McIntosh, who did not have any children, had owned the farm at Elsdon for more than 30 years and was helped by Andrew Tully on a day-to-day basis.
Mr Boon, 63, said: “She was always an outdoor girl and a proper country person. She was a conservationist.
“She loved the trees, plants and animals and was very knowledgeable.”
Ms McIntosh was born in Newcastle and studied geography at Newcastle University before doing a diploma in landscape design.
She worked for Berwickshire County Council and went on to study a forestry degree.
Ms McIntosh also worked for the Forestry Commission.
She set up her own company, Forest Design Services, and among other projects was commissioned in 2008 by Scottish Woodland to evaluate the tree -planting plan at Threestoneburn Forest on the eastern edge of the Cheviot Hills.
She allowed young fieldwork ecology students to use her farm for course studies.
Mr Boon said: “She was a lovely person. She was very enthusiastic and a determined character, but she had a very gentle side to her as well.”
There are currently no funeral arrangements, but Mr Boon said there was likely to be a private burial as well as a memorial service.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and are asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash and who may have information about it to contact officers in the Road Safety Unit on the 101 non-emergency number.
