The Duchess of Northumberland and Dr Angus Armstrong walk across Rothbury Bridge with pupils from the village’s first school as it was officially reopened last Friday.

The Duchess of Northumberland marked the occasion by cutting a ribbon and unveiling a plaque, before cars were allowed across the bridge for the first time in three years.

Despite rain, local schoolchildren and residents were there to celebrate the reopening, before being invited for a light brunch afterwards in the Jubilee Hall to thank them for their support during a long and complex project. Northumberland County Council has invested £3.7million in the bridge works and a team including engineers and stonemasons has carried out a highly-complex series of works to strengthen the bridge, which was built in 1460. A temporary Bailey bridge carried traffic across the vital crossing while the work was being carried out. For more photos, visit www.northumberlandgazette.co.uk
