An event which saw gardens in a north Northumberland village opened up to the public has been hailed as a success.

The Secret Gardens of Alnmouth first took place in 2012 and raised £1,700 from ticket sales, which was used to repair of the village’s war memorial.

It was decided to repeat the event this year and 18 gardens were open to the public on Sunday.

Shian Hartshorn, who organised the event, said: “It has been another great day following on from the one we ran in 2012 and many thanks must go to the 18 households who put in such a lot of hard work to make their gardens look so attractive and then invited the public in to see them.

“The wonderful comments we have had from people has made all that effort worthwhile and we have raised £1,323, which will be put towards some new self-watering planters which will make Alnmouth look even more attractive to visitors and residents alike.”
