Blaze hits Amble factory

Smoke billows from the former Northumberland Foods factory in Amble.

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a disused factory in Amble.

A huge plume of black smoke could be seen billowing from the former Northumberland Foods building on the Amble Industrial Estate as the flames took hold earlier this evening.

Northumberland Fire Brigade received a call at 5.49pm and six appliances - from Amble, Alnwick (two), Pegswood (two) and West Hartford - attended and got the fire under control. They are still at the scene.

Large crowds had gathered to watch the drama unfold as daylight faded.
