Beef sales soar as shoppers turn to high street butchers

Butchers across north Northumberland have seen sales of beef products soar in the wake of the horsemeat scandal.
While supermarkets have been clearing their shelves of products containing horse, high street butchers have been welcoming new customers.
Sales of beef mince and burgers have dramatically increased as people turn to their local shops. And one butcher has also been asked if he can source horsemeat.
Morris Adamson, owner of Rothbury Family Butchers, said: “We are getting new faces come into the shop and there has definitely been an increase in sales as more people realise they can trace the meat back to the farm it came from.
“We have had inquiries for horsemeat as well and we can get it if anybody wants it.
“It is a good advert for local butchers and we need to shout it from the rooftops.”
Mark Turnbull, of Turnbull’s butchers in Alnwick, added: “While trade in all areas is up, our mince beef sales have doubled and burger sales have also increased dramatically.
“All our meat is sourced from local farms and we pride ourselves on this, as it guarantees full traceability.”
Martyn Redpath, of Farm to Freeze at Wooler, added: “Sales have gone up like others have said, and it is great that people are eating local meat but the concern is that the price of it will start to rocket.”
