The agencies responded to complaints received from people in Hadston and Low Hauxley about music that could be heard from the Summer Sunset event at Druridge Bay Country Park, which ran from Friday, August 19, to Tuesday, August 23.

The county council says that despite agreements made with the event organisers, the noise on the Friday evening exceeded agreed and acceptable limits and caused significant disturbance to local people.

County council staff met event organisers the following day and monitored the noise level over the remainder of the festival to ensure that no further disturbance took place.

Coun Liz Simpson, chairman of the Safer Northumberland Partnership, said: “Working with the police we have taken action to mitigate against similar issues.

“Events are important both for enjoyment of participants, and to support local businesses and the economy.

“But it is not right that they should impact so negatively on local residents and the council has worked with the police to make sure that noise levels were reduced on the second day of this event and to put in place measures to mitigate against similar issues in the future for local residents.”

PC Paul Dent, from Morpeth Neighbourhood Policing Team, said that while events such as Summer Sunset bring welcome numbers of visitors and revenue to the area, this must be balanced alongside the needs of the community ‘who are entitled to have peace and quiet in their own homes in the early hours’.
