The first display is being held at the newly-opened Caumont Art Centre in Aix-en-Provence, where the painting will be on view from May until September.

It will then be exhibited at the purpose-built gallery, Turner Contemporary, in Margate, Kent, until January 2017.

Felicity Wheeler, House Steward responsible for the collection at Cragside, said: “We are thrilled that the painting is to be part of the exhibition; it helps support and highlight some of the fantastic items that our collection contains.

“Lord Armstrong adorned his home at Cragside with many beautiful objects; even as a leading industrialist, he appreciated traditional hand-crafted pieces and Cragside is a showcase for this type of work.”

Kilgarren Castle, the painting owned by Lord Armstrong, is an example of Turner’s early style.

It is on loan to the exhibition and will be back on display for visitors to view at Cragside in 2017.

National Trust curator, Jo Moody, said: “The National Trust is delighted to have the opportunity to share this painting with a wider audience and to enable it to take its place alongside so many of Turner’s great works.”
