Anger at parking tickets

Residents who were forced to move their vehicles out of a covered parking area to avoid them being flooded have reacted with anger after being given parking tickets.

As the water rose beneath Ropery Court, they say there was no choice but to shift their cars to Stonewell Lane outside, which is covered by a no-parking restriction.

One man, who asked not to be named, said: “They observed my vehicle for eight minutes before putting a ticket on it. We had no choice - there was two feet of water inside.”

A spokeswoman for Northumberland County Council said: “If a motorist can provide clear independent evidence that the vehicle was flooded and not movable, we will consider an appeal.

“People that moved onto a clearly marked no parking area near Ropery Court contravened the traffic order and will be dealt with normally.

“The importance of enforcing on-street parking restrictions and keeping the roads safe is heightened when weather conditions are poor, restrictions cannot be waived.”
