Alnwick town centre hit by severe flash flood

A MASSIVE torrent of water has brought part of Alnwick town centre to a standstill, after a fierce thunderstorm struck north Northumberland just over an hour ago.

The junction between Market Street and Bondgate Within was left flooded to a depth of two feet following torrential rain.

A number of shops have been affected and were forced to close.

Gazette reporters are on scene now and more reports will follow.

Traffic on the A1 at Haggerston, meanwhile, came to standstill as drivers faced treacherous conditions. Northumbria Police have asked motorists to take particular care on roads in the region due to the heavy rain.

On the railway, trains from Newcastle to Edinburgh have come to a standstill due to a landslip near Berwick.
