Alnwick is one of the best

Alnwick has been named as one of the best towns in Britain.

It has also been listed among the most desirable places in Yorkshire and the North East.

Yesterday, The Times revealed its 30 best town’s in Britain.

The towns were listed in random order and Alnwick made it into the guide, along with towns such as Arundel, Saffron Walden, Keswick and Thirsk.

The criteria was based on a town’s history, housing, amenities and looks.

The paper describes Alnwick as having period properties, cobbled streets, old pubs and its castle, which was used for some of the Harry Potter movies.

It also says that the town is near to the Northumberland National Park and the wild North East coast.

On top of this, the Sunday Times has listed Alnwick among the 10 most desirable places in the North East and Yorkshire, as part of the paper’s Best Places to Live, in its UK two-part guide, published across March 17 and 24.

The comprehensive and up-to-date feature takes a wide range of elements into account including transport links, quality of schools, natural beauty, low crime rate, property prices, cultural life and unemployment figures.

Each area is also assessed on its own individual assets, whether it has a festival, fascinating architecture or proximity to an airport.

The other locations named in the guide for Yorkshire and the North East are Harrogate, Skipton, Richmond, Sowerby Bridge, York, Beverley, Ponteland, Hexham and Gosforth.

Alnwick Chamber of Trade chairman Carlo Biagioni is excited by the news.

He said: “This is really positive for the town and it is a real boost just before summer. The timing is perfect because it has been a long winter.”

The overall national winner in the Best Places to Live was Stamford, Lincolnshire.
